I am a historian of science, a geologist, a reader, and a mother. I am currently researching and writing on the evolution, extinction, and genetics of domesticated animals, from domestication to the present. I am especially interested in how industrialization affected the genetic diversity of domesticated animals, and the recent trend toward conserving rare and heritage breeds.

I was born in Guatemala, grew up in Idaho, and currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area. My husband (I'll call him Nick) and I have three kids: A five-year-old (I'll call her Marie), and three-year-old twins (I'll call them Alice and Marcus). When Marie was four, I started writing down some of the questions she asked, and my attempts at answers.

In a former life, I was Brianna Rego, and published under that name while working on my PhD (in history) and MS (in geology) at Stanford University.
